So I stumbled upon The Marvelous Mrs Maisel one night on Amazon Prime and after one episode I fell in love. The show starts off with Mrs Maisel having the perfect life, beautiful apartment on New York’s Upper West Side, 2 children and a lovely husband. Her life is going according to plan until well I don’t want to spoil the show for you. If you plan on watching the show go watch and then come back to read this post lol. Anyway here are 3 money lessons I learned from The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
I’ll give you a sneak peak, but for all the tips be sure to watch the video!
Tip #2 Be willing to put in the work to do what you have to do to provide for your family.
Fun fact did you know that women weren’t allowed to get their own credit cards without their husbands signature until 1974. That’s right according to Cnn.com
“It was not until the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974 that it became illegal to refuse a credit card to a woman based on her gender.”
This show takes place in the 1950s when women were supported by their husbands and it was kind of looked down upon if you had to work or had a job. When Midge’s husband told him he was leaving her for his secretary, her parents didn’t know what she would do with her life. How would she live? She has to go get her husband back they pleaded fix your face and wear a sexy dress to go get him back, but she took life into her own hands and went to find a job. Although her passion was comedy she still had to find a way to make money outside of her passion. Luckily she did have her family to rely on when life got tough. Sometimes you will have to do things that you may not necessarily be passionate about in order to pay the bills.
I also wanted to just say that it’s not the 1950s or 1970s anymore and if you aren’t being treated with proper respect you shouldn’t feel like you have to stay and put up with that kind of treatment. Sure our grandmothers and maybe even our mother’s didn’t have much of a choice, and had to deal with being beat, and cheated on, but you have a choice now.
Tip #3 Make sure that you have a savings account of your own.
When Mrs Maisel gets herself into a little jam she has to call her husband who she was separated from for money. No one really likes to ask other people for money, which is why it’s best to always be putting money aside so that if you need it the money will be there. Whether you’re using a separate savings account like Ally, or Capital One or even Rize.
