Nobody actually enjoys sitting down to do their budget, but it’s super important. Budgeting doesn’t have to be boring you can make budgeting sexy. Each month pretend that you’re taking yourself on a date with your money. That’s what I’ve done each month on a specific date I sit down and go over my finances, but this post isn’t about me. Today I’m giving you 4 hacks on sticking to your budget planner.
This post was inspired by a question that I’ve gotten from a reader:
“I’d really like to change the way I approach budgeting. I can whip up a budget like nobody’s business, but I suffer from a serious case of out-of-sight, out-of-mind, so I’m researching alternatives and supplements to the traditional budget that will help me be a little more mindful of my spending and stick to my plans!”
#1. Know why you’re keeping a budget in the first place. What is your ultimate life goals that you’re working towards? When you’re tempted to spend your money ask yourself how is this purchase going to help me reach my lifetime goals? Is this purchase worth it? It’s super important to know why you’re sticking to your budget in the first place. Think about your future self and tell your present self no. Your goals must become more important than anything.
#2. When in doubt use cash. Sometimes using a credit card or even your debit card it makes it feel as though you have unlimited amounts of cash. When in reality you don’t. Using cash gives you restrictions and really keeps you on track with your other money goals that you set since now you know once that cash runs out that is it for you.
#3. Give yourself 24-48 hours before making a purchase. Giving yourself time to think about purchase let’s you really marinate over if you really need it and if this purchase will help you reach your long term goals. It can be tough walking away from those new yoga pants or new sneakers, but if you go home and still want them the next day and you have cash in your budget that allows for it by all means get the sneakers and yoga pants.
These are a few hacks that have helped me stick to my budget planner each month. Is there anything that you helps you stay focused on your budget? Let me know by commenting below.
